Jessica Jones Season: 1
Following the tragic end of her brief superhero career, Jessica Jones tries to rebuild her life as a private investigator, dealing with cases involving people with remarkable abilities in New York City. In Season 1 of this series based on the Marvel Comics character, former superhero Jessica Jones opens her own detective agency after her superhero career comes to an end. Initially hired to investigate the disappearance of an NYU student, Jones' investigation takes a dramatic turn when a mysterious figure named Kilgrave resurfaces, bringing Jones' past into light and putting her directly in harm's way.

It is a Marvel piece more concerned with aftermath than origin, which is a major change of pace for the brand. Netflix's Jessica Jones is a proud addition to that pantheon, wrapping one of the best TV shows of the year in a woman's struggle to defeat the abuser who nearly ruined her life. Jones is a darkly compelling anti-heroine, as richly drawn as Tony Soprano or Mad Men's Don Draper. She deserves better than this formulaic escapade that drably blends crime procedural and comic book cliches. Jessica Jones is well-executed on the level we've come to expect from Netflix-produced series, featuring a top-notch cast, solid writing and great use of its New York location to invoke both classic noir and '70s cinema. Jessica Jones is more psychologically complex, acknowledging how painful it can be to flee, to be free - even when you have an iron fist. The cast treats the dime-novel dialogue ("I don't flirt. I just say what I want.") with such richness that you won't miss the explosions that often deafen other shows in the genre. As a measure of solidarity to survivors and as an education for those who want to understand abuse beyond the statistics, it's hard to imagine a better show. Jessica Jones is a seriously enjoyable and smart addition to the seemingly endless Marvel media takeover. You don't have to be a diehard comic-book fan to dig into this neo-noir Netflix series. The series is one of the best I rate it 4/5.
