Yes, we can finally put visions of Ben Affleck in red in the rearview mirror as Matt Murdock has at long last been given the treatment his legions of fans have long-claimed he deserved. Charlie Cox reinvents the gentle hero for the good. Marvel's Daredevil, Netflix's latest offering, is a well-scripted, beautifully acted superhero saga that is surprisingly impressive. D'Onofrio's performance is the one truly great thing about a generally pretty-good show. Marvel's Daredevil gets the balance right. Handsome, meticulously paced and with a break-out performance from Cox, it has the potential to transcend the geek ghetto and become Netflix's biggest hit this side of House of Cards. If this is your kind of thing, then Daredevil is an exciting and well-executed example of the genre, elevated by smart writing, a charming cast, and affectingly visceral fight scenes. Daredevil's fight scenes are infused with the struggle of the poor and lower-middle class, and choreographed with thrilling uncertainty. Daredevil is a super-hero TV show that benefits from the simplicity of its concept. The advantage offered by the format of a Netflix series means that characterization gets top billing-you might come for the action scenes, but you'll stay because the characters get more compelling as the show continues. The series is one of the best. I rate it 4/5.
