The visual effects were designed by V. Srinivas Mohan through Rising Sun Pictures. Weta Workshop had worked on the digital and prosthetic make-up and background arts for the film. Principal photography commenced on 15 July 2012. The filming lasted for two years and eight months.

Critics praised Vikram's performance, the technical aspects of the film - especially the costume design and makeup, and A.R. Rahman's soundtrack and score but criticised the 'wafer-thin' writing and screenplay and the film's excessive length (188 minutes) However, the film was a commercial success, grossing ₹2.25 billion (US$35 million) worldwide, becoming the fifth-highest grossing Tamil film and Vikram's highest-grossing film at the time. Vikram won the Filmfare Award for Best Actor – Tamil for the movie.

A top shot model Diya (Amy Jackson) falls in love with Mr. Tamil Nadu Lingesan (Vikram), and together they become the most wanted model pair in the country. When Lingesan rejects an advertisement of a wealthy businessman (Ramkumar), who gave him the big break into ad world, he plans revenge against him. Now, he is joined by a greedy model (Upen Patel), lusty doctor (Suresh Gopi) and a trans-gender stylist who are out to cause massive damage to Lingesan's life which is worse than death. The rest of the story is how Lingesan takes revenge against these powerful people in the society.

'I' was a big budget movi in the Tamil Industry, Directed by S Shankar who is one of the biggest director of Indian Cinema. He directed the acclaimed Endhiran (Robot), which was a sci fi fiction and it made a huge storm in the Tollywood. In the Indian cinema as a whole he created a wave. So the movie was helming a greater expectation which the movie failed to satisfy. regarding the storyline it is a simple revenge story and what different about the movie is how the revenge is planned altogether. There are some cringe worthy fight sequences in the movie and to point some fingers the 'Bicycle fight' sequence is the worst.

The Best thing about the movie is 'Chiyaan Vikram's' Performance ! The hardwork he put on for the movie, the body transformation, the acting everything he did was great. It was the only thing which kept the movie together. The movie had a huge canvas to start with so when compared with that only Vikram stood high, Even the heroine was not up to the bench mark.
