Pacific Rim: Uprising (2018)

Jake Pentecost, son of Stacker Pentecost, reunites with Mako Mori to lead a new generation of Jaeger pilots, including rival Lambert and 15-year-old hacker Amara, against a new Kaiju threat. John Boyega (Star Wars: The Force Awakens) stars as the rebellious Jake Pentecost, a once-promising Jaeger pilot whose legendary father gave his life to secure humanity's victory against the monstrous "Kaiju." Jake has since abandoned his training only to become caught up in a criminal underworld. But when an even more unstoppable threat is unleashed to tear through our cities and bring the world to its knees, he is given one last chance to live up to his father's legacy by his estranged sister, Mako Mori (Rinko Kikuchi)-who is leading a brave new generation of pilots that have grown up in the shadow of war. As they seek justice for the fallen, their only hope is to unite together in a global uprising against the forces of extinction. Jake is joined by gifted rival pilot Lambert (The Fate of the Furious' Scott Eastwood) and 15-year-old Jaeger hacker Amara (newcomer Cailee Spaeny), as the heroes of the PPDC become the only family he has left. Rising up to become the most powerful defense force to ever walk the earth, they will set course for a spectacular all-new adventure on a towering scale. Pacific Rim Uprising is directed by Steven S. DeKnight (Netflix's Daredevil, STARZ's Spartacus) and also stars Jing Tian, Burn Gorman, Adria Arjona and Charlie Day.

It knows its mission parameters, and it ticks them off with alacrity. This is Transformers-level inanity. It will not make you feel like a 10-year-old, but it will make you feel 10 years older by the time you leave the theater. Putting DeKnight at the helm hasn't degraded the enterprise; if anything, it has put the enterprise, glorified demolition derby that it is, into proper perspective. It's 10 years later and another rock 'em sock 'em battle between the Jaegers and the Kaiju is in the offing. To its credit, Pacific Rim Uprising doesn't suffer from any pretentions about what it is, which proves kind of refreshing. This monsters vs. robots sequel is, surprisingly, much more than a dashed-off afterthought; it's speedy, nimble, fun, and -- best of all -- it doesn't take itself too seriously. It seems that the strain of being a loyal sequel and trying to be its own thing was too much for Uprising, as it tears itself apart in the attempt and leaves bare the skeleton of the decent actioner that could have been. Good writers borrow. Great writers steal. The writers of this action sequel are magnificently larcenous. Pacific Rim Uprising is a dumbed-down version of its predecessor, an imitation of the first film that doesn't live up to its creative imagination. The movie is comparitively good because of its visual effects I would rate the movie a 3/5.
