I DON'T FEEL AT HOME IN THIS WORLD ANYMORE (2017)

When a depressed woman is burglarized, she finds a new sense of purpose by tracking down the thieves alongside her obnoxious neighbor. But they soon find themselves dangerously out of their depth against a pack of degenerate criminals. Fed up with the human indecency she sees around her and set off by her home being burglarized, Ruth (Melanie Lynskey) teams up with her martial arts-crazed neighbor (Elijah Wood) to exact vengeance. However, the duo soon finds themselves deep into a world they know little about. Macon Blair directed this crime thriller.

Blair's film is like Blood Simple crossed with The Three Stooges-a clever, gritty tale of revenge at its most inept, anchored by performances that brim with goofy fury. What's delightful about "I Don't Feel at Home in This World Anymore" ... is how consistently the film challenges our worst assumptions about humanity even as it confirms them. The film is worth seeing for its interest in eccentric but realistic people, in particular Ruth, who's played with great intelligence and exactness by Lynskey. It would be easy to look at the title of this stellar oddball indie -- a film buckling with distinctly American rage, splattery violence and plenty of dark laughs -- and find a certain timeliness. With quirky characters, a somewhat meandering plot, quick jumps between humor and shocking violence, the Netflix release brings to mind past festival favorites like Joel and Ethan Coen's Blood Simple. The film is not only one tiny step away from being laugh-out-loud funny but also wastes too much unnecessary time focusing on the robbers, but even so it works quite well as it grows from being a quirky indie little comedy into something unexpectedly explosive in the end.
