Happy Death Day (2017)

A college student must relive the day of her murder over and over again, in a loop that will end only when she discovers her killer's identity. Blumhouse (Split, Get Out, Whiplash) produces an original and inventive rewinding thriller in Happy Death Day, in which a college student (Jessica Rothe, La La Land) relives the day of her murder with both its unexceptional details and terrifying end until she discovers her killer's identity. Happy Death Day is directed by Christopher Landon (Paranormal Activity: The Marked Ones) and written by Scott Lobdell and Landon.

On another level, Happy Death Day is a low-key celebration of cinema. Landon and Lobdell revel in how their story could only happen in the movies, piling on preposterous complications with self-aware glee. Director Christopher Landon and screenwriter and comics veteran Scott Lobdell maintain modest tension and humor as they deliver tried-and-true genre standbys like loud music jump-scares, an unnaturally deserted hospital and red-herring suspects. But the film doesn't just find a clever way to refresh a maybe-calcified genre. It also overturns some of the genre's more puritanical tendencies.

The movie is no big deal, but its Groundhog Day conceit is kind of irresistible, and the genre blend seems right for this age of women seeking stability and empowerment. There's a spunky charm to the Scream-meets-Groundhog Day thing, and the film is well-built. The problem is its chipper message.

If Mean Girls and Groundhog Day had a baby... and then that baby stabbed you... Happy Death Day is an imperfect movie that I had SUCH a good time with. I was on board ever since I first saw the trailer, and though it won't be making my top 5 or anything, I definitely was not disappointed. The idea is, of course, not the most original, but at least this is an effective combination of slasher and Groundhog Day that can be quite funny and entertaining, with nice twists, inspired deaths and a killing performance by Jessica Rothe to make it worth watching. So eventhough its not an original idea it has all the recipe for a good movie and it achieved that level.

I would give the movie a 4/5. Because I genuinely enjoyed the movie. #Moviereview #Vigalcollective #Blogging.
